History may not repeat itself exactly, but by its light we can see some of the pitfalls that lie either side of difficult decisions. As human genome work goes into overdrive, a slim volume from an American academic gives us a glimpse of the darker side of the project to improve the human gene pool. In a film buff's garage in New Jersey, the author discovered the last intact version of a
